Whether it is a hot day in the middle of the summer or a chilly winter morning, we all want one thing: to have the inside of the vehicle be comfortable upon entering. However, it can be frustrating to try to achieve the perfect comfort by constantly adjusting the AC or heat.
Gentherm understands this and has created an innovative solution to address this challenge- ClimateSense™. ClimateSense is a microclimate solution that will not only help everyone in the car achieve comfort but has also been shown to reduce vehicle energy usage. The future is here.
ClimateSense is Gentherm’s newest cutting-edge technology that configures a personalized climate zone for every individual in the vehicle. It is a microclimate solution comprised of advanced thermal products, integrated electronics, and embedded software which enables easy integration with existing automatic central HVAC control.
At the 2022 Eco Motion Conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, Gentherm’s Chief Technology Officer, Matt Fisch, spoke about how ClimateSense has the potential to drive the future of automobiles, specifically electric vehicles (EVs).
With the broader adoption of EVs, there are additional expectations that come with it such as personalization, reducing range anxiety, and cost savings. These are three aspects that ClimateSense is ready to offer in vehicles.
“We have a paradigm which we’re all living in where we have tremendous momentum financially through our OEM partners, automakers, and governments, to drive EV adoption.”

During his remarks, Matt Fisch explained, “We need to create that connection to the consumer using experience driven connection in order to complete the cycle for that adoption. The cabin is so important to create that connection with consumers and EVs… It’s what you experience inside the vehicle.”
The human centricity of ClimateSense is a key differentiator compared to central HVAC systems. In the future, using AI and vehicle connectivity, we see a shift from measuring the environment to sensing each occupant. For example, if we determine a person is drowsy or sweating, the system can take pre-emptive thermal actions such as applying local heating or cooling to mitigate the situation.
Along with its personalization benefits, ClimateSense is also environmentally friendly and sustainable due to its ability to conserve more energy than the standard HVAC cooling system. Data from a recent study utilizing ClimateSense in a Chevy Bolt EV showed the technology can deliver between 50 to 69 percent energy savings in cold weather testing and 34 percent energy savings in hot weather testing, when compared to only using the existing central HVAC system. By heating and cooling locally, ClimateSense offers improved time to comfort and a more sustainable approach by improving the range of electric vehicles.
With this new technology offering efficient comfort solutions while increasing range, EVs have the potential to quite literally, drive the future.
